Why You Should Schedule Summertime Heater Service

Summertime HVAC repairs don't solely focus on the air conditioning side of things. Before you forget about the would-be heating system that's on rest for the season, take a look at the reasons to pay attention to your furnace during the warmer months.

Your Heater Requires Repairs

By the end of last winter your heater's efficiency was less than desirable. Even though you suspected a problem, the fact that you wouldn't need to use the furnace for months to come gave you pause when it came to an immediate repair.

Why should you schedule a repair appointment in the summer? The top reasons to fix your furnace right now include:
  • There's a safety issue. Your furnace's failure to heat adequately, strange noises, or inefficiency may indicate a serious issue that poses a safety risk. Avoid a potential gas leak, fire, or other emergency issue with a repair as soon as possible.
  • You won't get cold in the summer. A mid-winter breakdown means you could potentially go without heat for days. But a summer repair allows you to turn off the system, wait for the tech to arrive, and still stay warm.
  • You can prepare for the next season. An unexpected early freeze may leave you without a working furnace in the late fall. A summertime repair appointment means you won't need to worry about whether your heater will work when you really need it.
A heater in need of repair may not make it until the next cold-weather season. If your summer service appointment reveals major damage or an irreparable problem, you'll need to move on to the next stepreplacement.

You Need a Full Furnace Replacement

Do you need a new heater? According to the International Association of Certified Home Inspectors, it's possible for a furnace to last up to 25 years. Some systems may last longer if properly maintained. But if your furnace is old, has extreme wear, has serious damage, or is inefficient, the summer is the time to schedule a replacement.

A heatless home is uncomfortable at best. Like with a repair, the warm summer months provide the perfect opportunity to remove and replace your old furnace with a new one-without having to freeze.

You Have a Whole-Home Filter

The filter in your unit may function with both the heating and air conditioning systems. If your HVAC system uses one air purification or filtration unit to catch allergens, dust, and other debris, maintenance is a year-round activity.

Months of heavy AC use in the summer can clog filters and leave your home at risk for poor indoor air quality. Depending on your needs, you may have to change or replace the HVAC system's filters several times a season.

People with allergies or asthma and homes that have pets or are under construction have higher filtration needs. If you wait until your pre-winter furnace check-up to change the filter, you may force your system to work harder. This reduces efficiency, raises operating costs, and may lead to premature failure.

You Have More Time

While a checkup or minor repair may not take much time, a serious issue or replacement can cost you an entire day. Now that it's summer, you may have more scheduling options.

The days are longer, the kids are out of school, and you're on summer vacation. Why turn your life upside down to make a fall or winter furnace service appointment? Take advantage of your free time and get repairs, have a checkup, or schedule a new installation right now.
